Of the original 12th or 13th century castle only a few remains of the curtain wall and the moat have survived. The castle played a strategic role in the “War of Wesel”, a dispute between Archbishop Werner von Falkenstein and the Town of

Oberwesel. It was from here that artillery was first fired in the Rhineland.
