Burg Maus über Wellmich
Maus Castle above Wellmich

Wellmich near St. Goarshausen is dominated by proud “Maus” (Mouse) Castle

which towers above this tiny Rhine-side village. The title seems derisory, but

that was only in the old days when the Lords of Katzenelnbogen were in power

at the neighbouring castle that bore their name. This was “Katz“ (Cat) Castle

and was said to be waiting to catch its hostile neighbour the “Mouse”. But a mouse hole is hardly the right description for the imposing walls of this castle

which is now gradually opening its doors to the public for concerts and other

events. In the grounds of the castle is the Eagle and Falconry Centre where

visitors can enjoy flying displays and interact at close quarters with a wide variety

of birds of prey. If you walk down to the village from the castle, don’t forget to visit St. Martin’s Church. The Gothic murals were only discovered in 1906 and were exposed in 1948.
