Castles galore. Trechtingshausen can boast two notable Rhine castles in its immediate vicinity, both guaranteed to evoke a sense of romance in visitors to the Rhine.
Rheinstein Castle is perched majestically on a steep rock like an eagle’s nest. In summer its magnificent gardens are shaded by a monumental vine which is several hundred years old. Here and at Reichenstein Castle next door, visitors can go on an exciting journey back in time. Amidst the myriad exhibits and different styles of furnishing one can easily imagine knights, big-game hunters, castellans and castle ghosts. Together with the Romanesque Clemens Chapel in its exposed position down by the Rhine, the two castles are Trechtinghausen’s most precious treasures.
Today both the castles and the chapel lie on an attractive circular hiking
route which leads the visitor out of the town through the wild romantic Morgenbach Valley, across secluded dells and up to the Schweizerhaus with its
