World Heritage high above the Rhine
- There’s something baking in Dachsenhausen
The World Heritage Site Upper Middle Rhine Valley is made up of 48 towns and villages with their own very special flair. Yet not all of them are situated directly on the river. On the heights above both banks of the Rhine are a host of picturesque little villages just waiting to be discovered.
The World Heritage valley’s hilltop communities can be found romantically
tucked away in the Rhine’s numerous side valleys, or nestling gracefully
amidst the softly rolling foothills of the Hunsrück and Taunus mountains. These
picturesque villages set in magnificent landscapes often have fantastic views of
the Rhine valley and are no longer a tip for insiders only. Hikers in particular will enjoy the wide selection of places to eat and stay. All of these serve as ideal starting points and destinations for exhilarating walking tours - perhaps along the Rheinsteig or the Rhein-Burgenweg. Many of these places are steeped in history which comes alive in their churches, ruined castles, museums and much more besides.
