Although the Rhine is Europe’s premier commercial shipping route it also offers
plenty of opportunities for yacht owners. Attractive marinas can be found at
regular intervals along the Rhine and they offer all the necessary facilities for the amateur skipper.
If you want to put your muscles to the test, then why not try a spot of rowing? But beware: the Rhine is only for experienced oarsmen and women, as its currents, whirlpools and of course, the dense shipping traffic are not to be underestimated. Canoeists, inflatable dinghy enthusiasts and other water rats are better off on the Rhine’s quieter tributaries where the current is kept in check at regular intervals by locks and you can gently paddle or float your boat down the river at a more leisurely pace. The rivers Lahn, Moselle and Nahe are just waiting
to be explored.
